Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University hosted the opening of the international conference “Black Sea Literature and Culture 4 and Beyond – Interreflections of Translation and Literature.” The two-day scientific forum explores the Black Sea region as a multilingual, multicultural and dynamic space where literature and translation interact with diverse cultural, historical and ideological contexts.
The conference was opened by BSU Rector Tite Aroshidze, Minister of Education and Sports of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara Maia Khajishvili, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Teona Beridze, and Associate Professor Khatuna Beridze.
The conference brings together 43 researchers from 14 countries — Georgia, Spain, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, the United States, Türkiye, Germany, Japan, France, Romania, Armenia, the Czech Republic, Canada and Morocco. The international programme brings together researchers in literature, translation, cultural studies, cognitive linguistics and digital humanities and includes both in-person and online presentations.
The conference aims to promote interdisciplinary research into literary and translation processes in the Black Sea region and beyond, presenting the region as an important space for cultural interaction, mediation and the emergence of new interpretations. Particular attention is paid to the application of corpus-linguistic and cognitive approaches, which enable the systematic study of translation patterns. At the same time, consideration of the translator’s habitus and culturally determined cognitive schemas broadens the possibilities for understanding translation within its historical and social contexts.
The main themes of the conference include:
- The Black Sea and beyond: literature and culture;
- Translation practices and empirical studies of Black Sea literature;
- The interreflexivity of translation;
- Cultural imperialism in literature and translation;
- Linguistic displacement and cultural translation;
- Censorship and literary relations.
The conference was held with the financial support of the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.
