
A public lecture entitled “The Georgian Language in the Digital Age: The Potential of Artificial Intelligence” was delivered at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSU) by Professor Manana Tandashvili, a Georgian linguist and Caucasologist and an Honorary Doctor of BSU. The lecture was dedicated to the renowned scholar’s 25 years of academic work in Germany.
During the lecture, Professor Manana Tandashvili discussed the history of artificial intelligence and its key stages of development, its areas of application, and the capabilities of contemporary AI applications. She also focused on the differences between artificial and natural intelligence, their relationship, and the ethical issues surrounding the use of artificial intelligence.
A significant part of the lecture was devoted to the challenges facing the Georgian language in the digital age. The importance of technological support for the Georgian language, its development in the digital environment, and the use of artificial intelligence to support these processes was emphasised.
At the commemorative event, speakers highlighted Professor Manana Tandashvili’s longstanding academic work in Germany and her significant contribution to Caucasology, the digital documentation of the Georgian language, corpus linguistics, and language modelling. Her role in promoting Georgian scholarship and culture in Germany and strengthening Georgian-German scientific and cultural cooperation was also recognised.
Particular attention was given to Professor Manana Tandashvili’s contribution to the creation of the National Corpus of the Georgian Language and the development of digital resources for Georgian. Speakers also highlighted the long-standing tradition of cooperation between the universities of Frankfurt and Batumi, including joint research projects in which early-career researchers are actively involved.
